ISU Tournament Paintball
Our tournament team is for those players with more experience in the Speedball format that have an interest in competing OR anyone that wants to become more competitive in the sport. If you’re unaware of this format the simplest way to describe it is that it is a faster, more intense format of play. Players shoot more paint, use higher end marker setups, and are typically more aggressive in their game play. Another notable difference is in the field of play; speedball is most commonly played on an open, leveled field (grass or turf) with air bunkers.
This team has a higher level of expectation from its players. People interested in this level of play need to be aware that having excellent time management skills and stable funds is crucial. The average amount of paint, our tournament players shoot in a practice is anywhere from 1500-2000 paintballs. It is important to note, that our organization has fundraising opportunities and limited university funding that can help lower to overall costs to play in addition to possible sponsorships.

Practices
Our team practices every other week, typically on Sunday mornings from 8:00am-12:00pm. As a more competitive team, it is expected that all people on the tournament roster be able to attend practices and have their own tournament marker set up and equipment. Should anyone be interested in this format but lack equipment and experience, we can assist you in acquiring your equipment at a lower price and coaching your skills.
As of the 2014-2015 season we will be a CPX team and practicing at one of the largest fields in the Midwest in Joliet, IL. During the winter months, practice is usually limited to 1-2times a month since we usually have to travel further north to Paintball Explosion in East Dundee for indoor practices.
Practicing at CPX gives the team a great opportunity to square off with other high level Illinois teams. CPX has become home for the MICT, NCPA events and the field has offered to assist the ISU team in reaching our goals. It is a partnership that is mutually beneficial. During the winter months, the team can be found at PBX where the grind continues against many top tier teams like Midwest Arson, Damage Inc, and even Chicago's own pro team, Aftershock.

Costs
Class AA Tournament costs usually vary depending on the location and team funding available. To help give a better idea, the average Class AA tournament costs $400-450 for entry but this includes five cases of paintballs. Additional cases of paintballs are usually available for $50-60 each.
Practice costs are not available to be openly discussed at the moment due to the possibility of compromising our team’s sponsorship. However, it is important to know fields across Illinois and mostly across the nation charge around $50-60 a practice. Team Practice Hours are common among fields that offer competitive speeball; it simply describes an allotted amount of time on a competitive field layout for teams only. These practice prices are reduced to allow teams to scrimmage in preparation for tournaments.

Tournaments
The ISU Paintball Team participates in the National Collegiate Paintball Association (NCPA). There are two possible divisions: Class A and AA. Right now we are currently a Class AA team, but in the years past when we had a lot of members, we also fielded a Class A team. Both formats hold the basic concept of 5 vs. 5 with the winning team hanging the flag at the center of the field on the opposing team’s side.
The season runs from September to April, with a little bit of a break between the semesters during the winter. We aim to play a minimum of two Class AA events each semester and then travel to Florida for the National Championships in April. There could be more or less tournaments depending on interest and funding.
